Senior math-science students Natascha Helfrecht-Kannady and Deepakkumar Sathishkumar have been named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. About 34,000 Commended Students nationwide are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
YoungArtsVisual Arts senior Madison Barrentine has been named a “Winner with Distinction” in Visual Arts in the prestigious YoungArts Competition.Creative Writing senior Kalvin Crescenzi was named a winner in the Writing/Short Story category.Madison will also attend the National YoungArts Week in Miami to collaborate with peers and develop their crafts with internationally recognized leaders in their fields.Madison and Kalvin are the only students from Alabama to be recognized in their categories.YoungArts is the most prestigious arts competition for 10th-12th graders in the United States. Congressional App ChallengeTwo teams from our "Girls Who Code" group led by faculty Richa Templin and another ASFA student won the 2023 Congressional App Challenge! Congress created the challenge to encourage students to pursue critical skills and recognize them for their efforts.The winning team gets invited to Capitol Hill where they get to demo their app to their representatives in the event called #HouseOfCode.Team A: Danielle, Aanchal, Sophia and Audrey (1st Place)Michael Mazur tied with Team B for 3rd place.They all worked hard on their apps! Here is a link to the press release which also has videos of their app presentations.International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference & FestivalThe ASFA Dance Department made a strong impact at the 34th International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference & Festival in Memphis, Tennessee. Our students were awarded over $40,000 in summer intensive scholarships and college admissions.Congratulations to the Christiana Thigpen, Christina Norman, Gabby Skrobis, Hannah French, Isabell Shemwell. Kamaya Welch, Lilly Wortham, and Zoey Jenkins!Both advanced to the state competition in March.
Poetry Out Loud Competition
CW students Egg McClure and Jaid Sconiers competed in the Region 3 & 4 Poetry Out Loud Competition. Egg won first place in the region for the Anthology Recitation category and the Original Poem category, and she won second place for the Social Issue category. Egg will compete in all three of those categories at the state level, and Jaid will compete at states in the Social Issue category.

Alabama Science and Engineering Fair
Virtual Fair hosted by Auburn University.
11 MS students qualified from the Central AL Science & Engineering Fair to compete in the AL Science & Engineering Fair (virtual). They had to prepare & submit a video presentation & poster. Then they had a 15 min interview with a judge on Apr 5. Eleven students competed and six received recognitions and awards. The list of eleven students who competed is:

AU - Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Award -This award is designed to recognize the top chemistry/biochemistry project. The awardee will receive a certificate and $100 cash award.

Selection as a finalist and scholarship recipient was based on scholarship, citizenship, leadership and service experience, as evidenced through a written application and interview with the Youth of the Year Committee. The finalists were selected from the largest pool of applicants in the club’s history.

16 M/S seniors and 6 M/S underclassmen competed in the 2022 Central AL Regional Science & Engineering Fair (CARSEF) at UAB on Saturday, March 5. They received many awards and recognition. American College of Cardiology Young Scholar Program
The program will kick off at ACC's Annual Scientific Session (ACC.22) in Washington, DC on Saturday, April 2, 2022,* where students will have the chance to meet scientists from around the world, sit in on sessions, and explore the Expo floor to visit exhibitor booths.
For a year following ACC.22, Young Scholars will also work virtually – through regularly scheduled webinars and Webex/Zoom calls – with a faculty mentor on a research project.
Program participants also have the opportunity to visit a local hospital or attend ACC State Chapter meetings throughout the year.*
