ASFA 2020-2021 Online Learning Daily "Bell" Schedule Core CABAB Schedule

 This scheduling model will be called the Core CABAB Schedule
A-Day=periods 1,3,7 B-Day =periods 2,4,6 C-Day=periods 1,2,3,4,6,7

Period 5 is not an instructional period and only exists for record-keeping purposes; it will be utilized when/if students are able to return to regular, on-campus learning.

• The week of September 8-11 and October 13-16 will be a Core ABAB Schedule (no school on Mondays of those 2 weeks).
• The week of November 9-13 will be a Core ABAB Schedule (no school on Wednesday of this week).
• The week of November 23-24 will be a Core AB Schedule (no school on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of this week).

Student Course Schedules

You will be receiving a separate email with your new username & password for iNOW access.  You can use this to access your schedule via the iNOW Home Portal on the ASFA website (go to Parents>iNOW>login using the access info sent to you via email).  Schedules are almost completed.  Please understand that some schedule adjustments might continue tonight and tomorrow, but they are completed enough to allow access to you. 

All core academic classes are filled and balanced.  We can make no schedule changes unless you have been scheduled into a course you already completed, or you are missing a course required for graduation. To change your schedule, for this reason, email Melanie Lee (mlee@asfa.k12.al.us).  Emailing is the most effective way for us to process your requests. 

Remember, STAR periods refer to open periods for additional study time, completing homework, physical activity, and additional specialty practice/rehearsal.

Elective Courses

A few elective courses cannot be taught online; however, most of our electives will still be available.  If you have open periods in which you can take electives, there will be information sent with your schedules about options on Aug. 12. 

Driver’s Education

We will continue to offer this elective course as a service to ASFA families.  It is not required.  However, we cannot guarantee that the entire course will be possible.  The first 9 weeks of the course is academic and will be available as all of our other courses online with the instructor.  Successful completion of that portion of the course would be documented on student transcripts.  That documentation qualifies students for insurance discounts.  The actual driving part of the course will be subject to current safety recommendations from the Jefferson County Health Department at the time when our first 8 weeks of school are complete.  If it becomes possible, we will attempt to arrange driving times for these students on scheduled days with required masks, car windows open (if possible), and a protective partition in the car. 

Parents & Students Online Learning Handbook

All behavioral and performance requirements and expectations in the ASFA Student Handbook remain fully in effect.  However, here are requirements and expectations for Parents & Students that will be especially helpful for our Online Learning experience.  Parents & students, go over these together; we really need your help and support for the best possible learning experience!

 Parents

• Motivate, support, and demand that your child attends all classes, be punctual, and actively participate.
• Ensure that your child establishes a separate, designated study space.  A bed is not acceptable.  A well-lit space is important.
• Help your child be organized by keeping a schedule, maintaining calendars, checklists, or personal agendas or whatever works best for keeping your child engaged and on top of their work.
• Hold your child accountable for their work and deadlines.
• Do not linger in your child’s designated learning space. Allow your child the space to be themselves. 
• Parents or any adults must not give assistance on tests or quizzes.
• Sign up for Google Classroom and stay aware of your child’s work and progress or use your child’s student log-in for access.
• Check iNOW open grade book regularly to remain aware of current grades and averages.
• Communicate directly with your child’s teachers, especially when you know your child is struggling.  Do not wait until a grading period is nearly over to communicate with your child’s teachers.
• Consider placing parental controls on gaming sites during class times.
• If possible, provide headphones for students.

 Students

• Attend all classes, be punctual, and actively participate.  Students should be actively involved, and not see themselves only as spectators.  Attention should be on the class.
• Establishes a separate, designated study space.  A bed is not acceptable.  A well-lit space is important.
• Dress code rules from the ASFA Student Handbook apply.
• Videos must be turned on in all classes and remain on.
• Be organized. Keep a schedule, maintain a calendar/checklist/agenda/whatever works to keep you on top of your work.
• Understand that class attendance and assignment deadlines will be enforced just as they would be in a traditional classroom setting.
